ThumbnailAn initiative to update the BiT Group site began early in 2001. It was intended not only to reflect changes in branding, but also to improve the site architecture and features, as well as showcase our technological skills. I became involved in the project only at the very end of the planning stage, and worked on it from that point through its comletion

My Role:

Information Architect, Flash Developer, Developer

Results:

My initial involvement in this project was to be solely as a devloper, building out the site from design prototypes. It quickly became apparent, however, that I would be needed to perform in other roles.

I ended up doing a substantial amount of Flash work on this project. One of our senior designers had done the initial design for the navigation elements (which were entirely Flash-based), but those demonstration prototypes lacked the functionality they needed to be used for actual navigation. So, I had to essentially rebuild the movies, which ended up being very programming-intensive.

We wanted to make the navigation system both modular (so adding or removing sections would be easy), as well as customizable on a per-page basis, so we would only need one movie for the whole site. Luckily, we were developing in Flash 5, so I had the type of programming environment needed to really meet those goals. The movie takes full advantage of Object-Oriented Programming conventions, making both the movie, and the code extremely modular.

I was also involved in the development of javascript detects to integrate the navigation into the HTML, as well as the development of a cookie system, allowing a short, intro movie to be bypassed by repeat users.
