BiT Group Visual Design Intranet

January 2001 - April 2001

ThumbnailBoth as a result of some departmental downtime and a continuing push for a company-wide intranet, a small group of us were asked to develop an intranet for the visual design department at BiT Group. Initial requirements were focused heavily on the need to allow content to be continuously added, and for simple workflows to be put in place. This site was intended to be not only functional, but also a proving-ground for technology that could be extended to a larger intranet in the future.

Skills, Technologies, Etc.

HTML, Javascript, Coldfusion, Spectra, Flash

My Role:

Lead Information Architect, Developer, Lead Flash Developer

Results:

The content management system we chose to employ was Spectra, from Allaire. Certainly not the most high-tech product on the market, but more than sufficient for our needs, and we already had some team expertise with it.

My initial involvement on the project was as an Information architect, developing a site structure from the requirements we had gathered. While it wasn't a terribly large site, it was important that it be easy to use if we expected anyone to use it, particularly the workflows.

My development work consisted mostly of turning the page designs into actual HTML so they could be integrated into the Spectra system. I did develop a rather ingenious calendar module in Flash that integrated with the objects we were using to hold information about upcoming events and classes. It was the first time any of us had tried integrating Flash and Coldfusion, and it worked quite well.
