Whitman College Redesign

Spring 2000

Note: I'm trying to locate the backup copy of the prototype after my hosting company went under. Please bear with me. - 4.6.03

ThumbnailIn the spring of my senior year, I heard through the grapevine that the college (the powers that be that is) was looking to redesign their site again. While I was never officially assigned to the project, I decided to work on it anyway, and came up with the following proposal (which never got past the review process, unfortunately).

Skills, Technologies, Etc.

HTML, Javascript

My Role:

Lead Designer

Results:

Most of the initial design work was based on feedback I had gotten from our CTO about other academic pages she liked. The model I settled on based on that was one of a portal or news site, with a lot of links near the surface. The thought was that the shallow, broad site architecture would help serve the role of a student intranet that I had hoped to use the site as.

In general, I was really happy with this design. I'm not crazy about the DHTML menus, but those had been used in the other proposal, so I decided to use them and work around it. They're not entirely cross-platform, and that's a worry, but the college site has never been truly cross-platform.

Given the always competing roles of the site as marketing tool and campus resource, I think this design would have fit it pretty well. Had there been more interest in the design, I would've been interested to see how it would have evolved.
